Airport Extreme and Time Capsule Pulled from Apple Retail Stores

Airport Extreme and Time Capsule Pulled from Apple Retail Stores

Apple is known for making products that "just work" and that's been true with its Airport Extreme and Time Capsule wireless routers. I've often recommended them as they are app enabled and integrate easily into an all or mostly Apple environment. But it doesn't "just work" if you can't "just buy it" and that's the case as of last week. Apparently, due to an FCC ruling that goes into effect June 2, Apple has pulled all of its Airport Extreme and Time Capsule routers from retail stores.

This doesn't mean it's impossible to buy one. BestBuy still carries them and Apple has them available online. It's likely that Apple is worried about the language that says they cannot "market" them, whereas BestBuy feels free to unload their inventory. The versions being sold on Apple's website have likely had a firmware upgrade that makes them compliant with the FCC's new rules.

Regardless, those devices are likely to see a refresh at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference, which is less than two weeks away. They haven't been updated in two years, so the timing is right. That might also be a good time to pickup the old model at a discount. Apple already has a $120 discount on a refurbished 3TB Time Capsule. I have several throughout the house to act as network extenders so every area of my home has coverage. They are normally expensive, but once a new model is released, that could change.
