Best Bluetooth Speakers: Sol Jam Lets You Harness the Sun to Power Your Tunes, and Your iPhone!

The EcoXgear Sol Jam Bluetooth speaker ($149.99) is one of my new favorites for best portable Bluetooth speakers. Its most outstanding feature is its revolutionary quick-charge SunCore solar panel built into the device's top side. Thanks to this panel, you can take this speaker off grid for extended periods; and with the panel's intelligent charging system, designed to deliver an effective charge (even in lower-light and artificial-light conditions), you can effectively keep the party going indefinitely without the pressing need to plug into a wall outlet.

The Sol Jam is already one of my top contenders for best Bluetooth speaker of 2016. The fact that it has its own built-in power source capable of keeping its internal battery topped off is a huge consideration for anyone looking for a practical accessory that doubles as both a loudspeaker and a charging bank. In fact, as impressive as the speaker system sounds, the fact that this is also a back-up battery power bank that recharges from the power of light is no less impressive, and might be even more of a crucial deciding factor for those of you accustomed to roughing it.

If you've ever done any off-grid camping of any sort then you know how fast your iPhone's battery can drain. Sure, an internal iPhone battery that lasts a full day is not a bad thing, but if you are away from electricity, that one day's worth of battery power will fly by, and if you find yourself in any kind of trouble or precarious situation while away from civilization, having a battery back-up and a solar panel can literally be a lifesaver. With the Sol Jam, you get the best of both worlds, in a speaker that can provide entertainment as well as an electrical charging source.

In terms of sound, the Sol Jam's two 10-watt stereo speakers and large passive bass radiator result in a rich and robust sound. For its compact size, this little speaker packs a heck of a punch, with reverberating bass and crisp, clear highs. It also includes a microphone for the convenience of speakerphone calls. I've actually had the opportunity to spend some time with this little dynamo in the great outdoors and I can vouch for its powerful output; it definitely fills your personal space with high-quality audio.

This Bluetooth speaker would come in handy for most anyone, especially anyone who leads an active lifestyle and spends a lot of time outdoors. However, if you are the type who camps often or spends long stretches of time off grid  or by the water, then I'd consider this the best waterproof Bluetooth speaker you could get. The fact that this speaker is capable of charging itself as well as your devices goes a long way toward making it an indispensable piece of modern survival equipment.
