An Interview with an App Empire

An Interview with an App Empire

I'm usually the one doing the writing and interviewing, so it was a rare treat to be interviewed for a change. In addition to reviewing gadgets and writing about Apple news for iPhone Life magazine, my main job is as an app developer. In fact, I've developed over 100 apps since the App Store began almost a decade ago.

Most of my apps involve Text-To-Speech, but recently I've been working on some photography-related apps. My latest example is PresidentCam. I developed it after hearing a certain Presidential candidate, who will go nameless, declare that the other candidate didn't "look Presidential," whatever that means. The app lets you add "stickers" that represent official Presidential symbols such as a podium, the Presidential seal, an eagle, an American flag, etc. You can resize, rotate, and reposition the stickers, all superimposed over a live camera view. Then tap the camera shutter button and you've created a Presidential portrait of your own!

It's a fun and timely app, so I wanted to let people share their creations. That's where OSTETSO comes in. Sure, you could write a bunch of code to create an Instagram-like photo-sharing gallery within your own app, but the OSTETSO SDK/platform does all that for you automatically. And, unlike the standard iOS Share Sheet functionality, it also allows any shares to Facebook, Twitter, email, iMessage, etc., to point to a custom web page featuring your user's photo, with links back to your app.  (That’s the same method Instagram used to drive their huge viral growth). It's a novel approach and a good compromise. I was happy to help them improve the service to be even easier to integrate and give them my thoughts in the interview.
