New Buttonless Fingerprint Reader Hidden Behind Glass

New Buttonless Fingerprint Reader Hidden Behind Glass

Every iPhone since the original has shared the same basic styling: a thin bevel on the side and a larger bevel on the top where the camera and speaker are and the botton where the circular home button is. Even the iPad shares this look. When Apple managed to integrate Touch ID directly into the home button, it seemed like that design would be permanent. After all, how could Apple condition users to use that combination home button and fingerprint reader and then later move or remove it? And that means we are stuck with a screen that is substantially smaller than the front of the iPhone, or iPad.

LG Innotek

That could change. LG Innotek has shown off a fingerprint reader embedded underneath the touchscreen. This could one day enable truly edge-to-edge displays. Apple has seen that the 4-inch form factor of the iPhone 5 (and now iPhone SE) is indeed popular, but with such technology, a larger (or at least taller) display could be achieved. If they can hide the speaker and camera as well, the full front of the iPhone could be nothing but a display.

Still, Apple tends to stay pretty consistent with its designs. Such a change would be pretty radical, and embedding the fingerprint reader, camera, and speaker might interfere with display quality, color, or 3D Touch. On the plus side, it would make waterproofing the device more practical. Regardless, such a change is not likely to appear in the iPhone 7, which is showing up in leaks already.
